In 1954, Darrel Huff wrote the bestseller, How to lie with statistics, in which he outlines the misuse and errors in the interpretation of statistics. In the same vein, Mark Monmonier wrote the book How to lie with maps where he describes how maps only present one of many possible stories about the places it depicts. The most recent book has is about data and has the word ‘lie’ in the title is How charts lie by Alberto Cairo, in which he explains that we are still ill equipped to interpret data visualisations.

As a big fan of road cycling, and a little bit BMX and MTB, I became curious about what other disciplines exists in cycling. The visualisation below shows the wide range of what cycling on two wheels has to offer. The bars represent the number of events that took place in 2020.

We zien stemmen als een weloverwogen proces. Een keuze die onze waarde en inschattingen vertegenwoordigd en niet door irrelevante zaken wordt beïnvloed. In Nederland is het daarom ook vastgesteld in de wet dat onze stem niet beïnvloed mag worden door wat voor reden dan ook. Toch worden we (ook in Nederland) in de praktijk weldegelijk beinvloed. De afgelopen jaren ben ik steeds meer podcasts gaan luisteren. Wat me opvalt is dat het lijkt alsof er steeds vaker dezelfde gasten aanschuiven en dat hosts ook graag bij elkaar achter de microfoon kruipen. Onderstaande data visualisatie bevestigd dit beeld. Waar de Engelse taal wel onderscheid maakt tussen de woorden ‘happiness’ en ‘luck’, gebeurd dit in de Nederlandse taal niet. Geluk is geluk. Volgens onderzoek valt te stellen dat ‘geluk’ en ‘geluk’ voor 60% hetzelfde zijn. 50% wordt namelijk bepaald door je genen (geluk) en 10% door je omstandigheden (geluk). Voor de overige 40% wordt geluk bepaald door onze acties. Hier doet het woord ‘geluk’ dus eigenlijk te kort. Wat vindt jij, is er een Nederlands woord voor happiness? en zou die er moeten komen?
